OM 651 getting louder and louder
My engine, 2.5 liter inline 4 diesel, has gotten considerably louder over the years (now at 73K). I understand the typical explanation is typically that cars get noisier over time. (water pump, steering pump, A/C compressor...... they all age and make more noise)..... however, in my case, the diesel "click clack" is getting louder over time. Except for the turbo boot being cracked for no reason about 20K miles ago, it's been a trouble free engine.
Is this normal for diesel to get louder over time? According to my mechanic, the engine on my car is in excellent shape. What kind of things can I do to bring this back to newer and somewhat quieter condition?

First thing that comes to mind is timing chain adjuster.

Besides timing chain adjuster possibility, maybe some of the sound proofing in and around the engine bay has been removed or come loose. There are some foam padding under the engine cover around the injectors/glow plugs and insulated splash panels under the engine that help to reduce clatter.

as it turns out, it wasn't the engine. it was the engine/transmission mount (dealer said they are the same thing). it's a little less vibrations after replacing the mount.
