W166 OM642 EGR codes and bucking/surging

I was coming back from a trip towing my trailer with my 2014 ML350 Bluetec, 65K miles, and check engine light popped up and the engine was bucking/surging at very light throttle/load. Codes were:

14CF00 "The positive control deviation during exhaust gas recirculation control is too high"
155D00 "Component 'Y27/9 (Exhaust gas recirculation actuator)' has a malfunction"
181F00 "The temperature sensor in the soot particulate sensor has a malfunction"

I assume I should start by removing the EGR valve and piping and clean? Does that typically resolve it, or am I likely looking at a new EGR?

For the soot particulate sensor, it looks like it just needs to be replaced? Does it need to be coded? Any other thoughts?

Neither part has to be coded. You can remove the EGR and see if its closing all the way and moves freely. If not, try cleaning and reinstalling. If it is, then its probably bad. Exhaust temp sensors are a fairly common failure. I would replace it no question.

I am getting same codes. How did you fix it?

I have a 2014 ML 350 bluetec and had the codes for the EGR. 149800, 149a00 148b00 14b700 155d00 codes from using a ThinkproS scanner. SUV went into limp mode and revved high shifting gears. Scan tool also showed TCM was not communicating. But TCM was back online after cleaning and code erase.
I removed the EGR and cleaned it and then used some small screwdrivers to pry on the end to make sure it moved. WD40 to lube, Reinstalled it and used the scanner when the engine was running to activate the EGR valve and the engine changed when activated open and closed so I knew it was working. Difficult getting to the connector and the water hose as space is tight even when removing the access cover on the firewall. If it happens again, I just buy a new one from FCPeuro. I do see I have a EGR learning function on my scanner so I would likely need to do that after a new one. Also there is a youtube video on where it is and how to install. Use a chisel carefully to remove it as it's usually stuck in the manifold. Having a good scanner that is bi-directional saved me TONS of money.

While EGR issues prior to the exhaust gases reaching the point where the PCV tube is connected, are likely not problems caused by the PCV system, I would say every diesel engine should have a serious catch-can setup to lower the formation of sludge on the intake manifold, ports, runners and valves of the engine. Sludge build up can lead to a variety of issues and possibly sensor mis-readings/failures.
Here's what I built out of 1-1/2" galvanized iron pipe from the hardware store, it's packed with steel scouring pads as the filter/cooling media. I have a draincock on the bottom with a tube on it so I can easily collect the precipitate from under the car:

just replaced mine on a 2015 gl350 at 147k (bought from FCP). No relearn required.
