new guy question: 2005-2006 NA version catalytic converter/oxidation catalyst specs?

does anyone know what type of catalytic converter is on this model with the om648 direct from the factory? is it a ceramic substrate honeycomb or metallic substrate of some sort?
i know the typical method to remove exhaust restriction is to hollow it out or replace it with a straight pipe, however, i'd prefer not to make my car stink. i'm considering replacing it with a higher flowing 3" spun, metallic substrate 100 or 200 cell if it would work. trouble is, any info on diesel cats seems to assume some aftertreatment, dpf, and/or a three-way catalyst that would require more than just the single oxygen sensor located pre-cat. so does the stock converter deal with NOx specifically, or just skip it altogether?
from the current level of research i've done, there doesn't appear to be any significant difference between petrol and diesel converters until the additional aftertreatment/dpf/three-way set-up.
a "universal diesel cat" is priced around $350, while a "universal cat" can be as low as $100. both spun metallic substrate cats. why the huge difference? what am i missing?
sorry to throw so many questions out at once. hopefully someone can shed some light on the subject for me.

yes, no cats nets the highest power increase, and the gentleman who did my ecu suggested that as the next step. and that certainly is a nice looking install, but not exactly what i'm intending to accomplish. i don't want the sound increase of removing the cat as well as the mufflers, just free up flow and keep the odor levels down. if the cat came off completely, i'd have to put some type of mufflers back on(likely perforated tube style) to keep a degree of 'sleeper'ness.
honestly, i just want to know the difference between a metallic substrate cat for gasoline vs a metallic substrate cat for diesel and how effective each would be in comparison to the original converter in the car.
after 15 years of tech progress, it would seem reasonable to have improved flow while maintaining the same level of catalyst effectiveness, wouldn't it?
