OM642 Fuel leak near fuel filter
Went to start the car this morning and it would crank, but no start. I noticed diesel smell and a puddle forming under the car. Popped the engine cover off and it was pretty obvious what was wrong

Close up view. This is what popped out
I did a quick search, but didn't find anything. Is this a common problem? I reattached it, put the clip back in place, and tied a string around the clip so that hopefully if this happens again I don't lose the clip.
Thank you!

No, wiring fuel lines is not a common problem. Most of owners use original parts.
There is at Tee somewhere on the line originally and you need to restore it to original parts.

You picture is not showing the whole Tee, but it happen to me on newly purchased car that the end with oring pop-out from the fitting. Inspection show that mechanic (auto was serviced at dealer only by PO) bend holding clip to save 2 minutes of creating proper access to it.
So yes, lousy mechanics are common issue.
It is safety issue as well. In my case the fuel line disconnected at 75 mph, creating huge cloud behind. I lucked with no fire, but fuel spilling on hot exhaust is safety issue.
On my 2009 model the fitting was metal.
