You are absolutely correct. The pcv valve is brand new due to the field measure. It's almost certainly your piston rings. This exact thing happened to my 2009 r320 bluetec. I sold it and I was fully transparent about the oil consumption issue. I had purchased it for 5500 and i sold it for 3000. I lost almost 3k but I made sure I was transparent about the issue.

Maybe try one of the engine flush/oil cleaner type things, there is a thread right below this one that talks about it. Worth a shot before heading off to get the rebuild.
