OM642 Air Mass Sensor air duct

Hey guys,
Quick question, I need to replace my air duct on my OM642 (has a small crack in it), I can only get a genuine one from where I live, which is from the dealer who want $1400 AUD for it, which is ridiculous.
Would it be ok if I went with an aftermarket one?
Thanks.

Aftermarket is hit of miss, so do you feel lucky?
I know those parts are much cheaper in USA and some sellers will ship internationally, so give us part number and we check?

Check gumtree, there was a guy in WA trying to sell an aftermarket one.

I've put one in from Aliexpress. Time will tell whether something will let go and screw the turbo (I'm looking at you metal mesh).

I had a fault come on the MAF. Took out the genuine one and looked at it, one was dirty, one was very clean. Car was running fine (no check lamp), so started thinking about a convenient time to change it. Then read that you need to reset adaptations when changing the sensors. Reset the adaptations, and haven't had a problem since.

Fitment was pretty much perfect. Well worth going aftermarket. I think I paid AU $250 shipped. You just have to research the crap out of which Y piece model you have and make sure you get the right one. Don't expect to get any help on that from the sellers.

Looking though my history, this is the one I bought (no idea if it's still the same):

I always try and avoid buying aftermarket parts, but in this situation I may take the risk. I tried ordering a genuine one from FCP Euro, but for whatever reason they can't ship it via air.
Part number that matches my engine is: A6420908237.
Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

Thanks for the info.
I would imagine my MAF aren't in the best condition as they are the original ones.
Do you need a merc specific scanner to reset the adaptations?
I have an Icarsoft CR Max.
Thanks.

If it's just "a small crack", can it be repaired? You didn't post a picture, but sometimes you can stop drill the ends of the crack to relieve stresses and apply the appropriate plastic adhesive to the outside to seal it.

Just fix the crack, plasty weld or however seems a simple fix for most part.

Hey,
Thanks for the link. MB Direct Parts don't ship to Australia.
You seem like someone I can trust, especially seeing all your help/knowledge you have contributed to these forums.
Could do with the help again.
Thanks

It probably can be repaired, I wouldn't mind replacing the MAF anyway as they are still the original ones and can't easily be cleaned.

If you need help- PM me.
I found those plastics not really glue able. The only thing that eventually works is urethane roofing caulk, who dries to rubber-like stuff with great adhesion to everything.
Bad part it takes several days to dry.

Hope the urethane works for you. The batwing is made of a realy slick plastic, like detergent and oil bottles. Kajtek1 is right on that and glue not sticking.
My MAFs went bad on my 2008 E320 Bluetec. Cleaning with spray only worked for a few months. I tried the store brand from one of the big parts houses specializing in Euro parts. It was Chinese and failed after 6 or 7 months. Returned it and got a Mercedes part.
Cheap only worked for a while.
