OM642 oil usage, non-usage

Curious what kind of oil consumption people are seeing with their OM642 engines. Mine is a 2013 GL350 with just a tick under 200k on it (198+). Just did the math and it looks to be burning about 0.2 quarts per 5k OCI’s. I only fill with 2 gallons at oil changes which brings it up to 1/2 way between min/max. I use a ProVent 200 and it catches about 3oz every 1,500 miles and when you do all the math it comes out to 0.2 Qts getting burned since there are no leaks. I’m pretty happy about that. 85% of my driving is on the interstate at 70-78 mph in South Carolina where it’s pretty flat so it’s not working as hard as many others might be.

This is at 5,100 miles on the last change which is fixing to get changed again in a day or so.

That sounds pretty much spot-on for mine as well... it is down no more than 1/4 of a liter (0.26 of a quart) after ~8K kms (5K miles) of mixed use including towing the race car trailer. It actually uses less oil now than it did when it was new, and it does use more in the summer when towing - there is almost no appreciable oil use during the ~5K km (3100 miles) I put on it during the winter months.

How many miles do you have on your car/truck?

About 80K kms (50K miles). Between the various cars, I only drive it about 10K kms a year and it was the very last 2015 MY truck left in Canada (2015 BTs were still made for the Canadian market).

If you want a more meaningful comparison, we're got five diesel Sprinters. Three were bought new and two were used (allegedly demos). The two demos are the oldest (pre-2012) and now have close to 500K kms on them... they are down about 1/2 - 3/4s a liter when we do a UOA around 8K kms, so no more than 1.5 liters per 16K kms (10K miles). The other three are newer (2018) with between 240-280K kms on them, and all three use up considerably less oil - around 1/2 a liter every 16K kms (10K miles) so in line with my 2015 ML and what you are seeing with yours.

We're about to get rid of the two old ones (they're pretty beat up), and are waiting for a new 2023 Sprinter with the new OM654 4-pot turbo diesel and the 9-speed transmission. Curious to see how well that one will fare in the long term, although that engine won't make it into passenger cars.

Thanks a million for the info! Aren’t you running 229.52 mobile ESP in them?

They're all using a 5W-30, 229.52 spec oil (that is the only approved oil spec for the 2018s). The two older ones can technically use a 229.51 oil, but the 229.52 is a better oil spec in every area regardless. I am not sure what you mean by "mobile ESP" (Mobil1 ESP?), but for the last five years all we've been using in them - as well as in my ML - is Motul 8100 X-Clean EFE. Not the cheapest oil but IMHO worth every penny (plus we get it at a wholesale price).

The OM642 in my Sprinter has 206k miles on it and I did not have to add oil for last 2000 miles. Too little to worry about it, or keep the records.
Even if you add 1 l every 1000 miles, that should still be acceptable, although MB spoils us with minimal oil useage.
Still when you oil level is not going down at all, that might be indication of fuel getting in it.
Filling up 1/2 on the mark during oil change was always recommended. That, with low oil usage will give you a chance to add oil with refreshing detergents and anti-acids before next change.
Another vote for Motul 8100

Motul 8100 for long time was 1 of the cheapest 229.52 grade oils available in US, but lately Valvoline had a sale, so I bought it for 1 of my cars.
