Let me know if there's any interest in the car or the BBS. I'm on the fence right now but have a solid offer from the dealer at $40k for trade value. Just not sure what I want to do but having a private buyer might make it a little easier to decide

Good Luck
I've been trying to sell mine for about 4 months now in Canada no one is interested even though I'm offering an extra set of winter wheels and tires.

Are you "trading" car at $40K for something else or are they "buying" car from you for $40K without you buying a car from them? If its former, then IMO it does not warrant an extra effort on your part as $40K + $2K VA tax (5% in VA, right?) savings yeld $42K total value.

Wow. You overpaid for them quit a bit. I normally buy at The TireRack, and shipped price from them would have been under $4,300 mounted/balanced with TPMS sensors.

you don't pay state sales tax on selling a car. there's a smaller tax when you buy but that wouldn't be relevant here as its assessed on whatever else I might get, not this transaction (unless VA law changed for 2012)

these came from Tire Rack and this was the first set in the country in this color and fitment. And, I searched on the wrong email - $5100 was the BBS LM's for my last car. I buy too many expensive wheels that I lost track....

Looking at the receipts, it was right at $4300 for these, like you said. They shipped 3 from one warehouse and 1 from another, so I didn't key in on the right email and saw only the amount from the LM's the year before (thank you gmail....)

Do not know where in my post did I suggest that.

Obviously one pays state sales tax on purchases (not sales), but when you trade-in, you pay only on the difference:

1. No trade in - new car price is $60K, you pay $60K + $3K tax = $63K

2. Trade-in is $40K - same new car price ($60K), you pay only the difference of $20K + tax on the difference (unless VA car trade-in tax rules are completely different from say NY or FL) which is only $1K = $21K.

The difference is $42K ($63K-$21K) which is $40K for car trade-in allowance plus $2K in tax savings. So if you're trading in at $40K for a more expensive (that's what I assumed) car, its the same net $$$ effect as selling for $42K privately without any issues associated with private sale. Surprising you do not understand it (based on your reply).

honestly, I've traded a car one time ever in my life (I generally have three at any given time and one gets sold before another comes in). It makes sense to only pay tax on the diff but in VA, the DMV assesses tax on value, not price. Odd.

Ah, I see. So you are getting no tax benefit in VA by trading-in hence you're trying to sell privately. I would move to a more tax trade-in friendly state..just kidding. GLWS.

A few reasons actually and none negative; I love the car. I put a bunch of money down on it and with buying a new house last year, there are a few things I could use that money for right now (like paying off the balance from the previous house we had to sell....we had a bit of an underlap after paying the realtors).

We want to get back to a three car family so I'm considering a Wrangler Unlimited for a daily driver for now (completely financed). I'd like to buy a new CLS550 as my little one is getting big enough it would be nice to buy a four door but I want to wait until the next model year since it was a fresh redesign and want to make sure the kinks are worked out on it. I'm going to miss this car in the meantime but it feels like the *right* move if I look at a 12 month plan.

update - ended up trading the wife's FX in on a Wrangler Rubicon MW3 Edition. I'll be driving that and my wife will drive the Benz (she works from home so easy way to keep the miles down for another year).

I'm considering selling the barely used set of BBS wheels/tires. She won't care about having them on the car and it seems silly to keep them if that's the case. Any interest at $3500 including TPMS. Bought in August and removed in November for the winter. Michelin PSS for the rubber.
