Brakes problem!

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with my brake discs. I have an unusual wear and a very bad feeling when i brake at higher speeds. The brake pedal starts to vibrate and i don't feel it at all. It's like pushing a stone.

Any suggestions?

Looks like an issue with the rotor - those cracks coming from the cross drilled holes are not supposed to be there! Strongly suggest you get the car to your dealer ASAP for an accurate analysis of the issue. May be a problem with the pads/calipers also.

A little cracking is normal but this is a result of just plain overheating. The cracks appear to be throughout the material not just the hole areas. Time for a set of new rotors and pads and a very good chance you have boiled the fluid more than a few times so you might want to do a fluid change along with a fluid type change. When this is all apart you might want to check the caliper seals and bearing seals for leakage but probablly OK. No real mystery here just a set of well used brakes. Good job!

Looks like rotors badly overheated (Stress fracture due to continual overheat). A second look at the lower part of the rotor near the hub, looks like a serious knife edge due to extreme wear. Looks like a good 1/8"-1/4" of the base material is worn (see top pic).

As someone mentioned you might want to change your calipers. Dragging brake caliper? someone mentioned seals..etc. I agree to have your calipers looked at or replaced if this wasn't self-induced or by previous owner.

In any case, it is good to have a safe automobile. Be well.

As others have said it looks like extreme heat damage. They look exactly like every rotor that came off one of my race cars after a season or less of hard braking. The cracking around the holes and stress checking on the rotor surface are normal from high heat.

I have never seen this on a rotor of one of my street cars but then again I am not hard on the brakes all the time.

Is this on all rotors or just one or two? The reason I ask is many rotors are ion implanted to harden the surface some. If you only have one like that maybe they screwed up during manufacture. On the other hand I have no idea what MB does to their rotors.

The tip off to whether they are hardened or not is usually the hardened types specify no rotor resurfacing.

unfortunatly, I think that's normal, because the brakes are for itself terrible, so I'm not surprise they are in that shape. Brakes with one pot??...c'mon MB!!

Just to be clear, this is happening with your S Class vehicle, correct, or did I miss something? If so, have you tried posting this in the appropriate mbworld S Class forum?

I know nothing about those cars, but perhaps others are having the same problem and/or MB has issued a service bulletin.

I have the same problem as you but I have not had time to bring it back to the dealer. I smell something burning whenever I brake hard. Please let me know how it goes when you take your car in for service.
