Automatic stuck in 3rd gear
Hi, my 2010 E350 CDI seems to get stuck in 3rd gear from time to time. I noticed it will change gears at around 3000rpm instead of 2000 as is should, then when it hits 3rd gear it tends to stay in that gear, untill i put it in manual and then it will shift. This problem also coincides with a weird low frequency noise popping up when in reverse when parking up. Ive also noticed a burning rubber kind of smell once i've parked up and stepped out. The burning rubber smell, vibration and over revving and stuck in 3rd gear seems to come as a package. I've had my car from new, and have taken it to mercedes and they have failed to diagnose the issue and my car is out of warranty now...any ideas?

The burning smell reminds me of if you are burning your clutch on a manual transmission. Maybe that is what is happening on your car?

Considered it...although i think this is unlikely as i only put it in manual for maybe 2 minutes just to get it to shift out of the stuck gear. I very rarely drive in manual...

Yeah, but perhaps the auto is malfunctioning and burning up your clutch. MB really should figure it out. If it's out of warranty, just take it to a mechanic you trust.

I think there might be a software issue where it doesn't allow for a gear change past 3rd/4th gear...and so it overworks the gear and so the gears overheat resulting in a burning smell...not too sure, just a guess atm but im gonna get it checked properly.

You could do a transmission reset, switch the ignition to position 2 with the accelerator to the floor for about 20 secs, then switch off. then start the car as normal..........drive off. It doesn't just do a transmission reset it does a number of things, well worth knowing.........

Hi,
Worked out the burning smell is actually coming from the DPF regen taking place, I wonder if it is normal for the gears to stay in 3rd to moderate the revs and keep them at minimum 2500...

Did the Dealer read the tranny computer? If it has no codes, try a fluid level check and/or fluid and filter change. If it has over 40K, it should have it anyway. The vibration actually sounds like low fluid level. Check for leaks including the tranny cooler system.
