Sunroof Shade Not Enough Shade
Got my 2016 E400 back in October but now that summer has arrived I'm finding the sun shade for the sun roof to be less than useful. Has anyone found a modification that solves this...?

i believe as long as the sunroof is tempered glass like your side windows you can put a tint on it. When i looked into it there was some debate about whether tinting the glass would cause too much heat between the glass and the shade when closed... I believe that this was proven to be false as long as the sunroof is tempered glass and the sunshade is semi permeable (which ours are)
It was also suggested to me to use that "silver Mirror" finish tint. It reflects the sunlight much better and the lighter color absorbs less heat
In short, get it tinted.

I guess I forgot to mention that I had my sunroof tinted way back when I first got the car last October. I had the guy tint the rear window and the sunroof pretty dark (can't remember the %) but still it's just not enough. I'm used to shades that block the sun 100%, but I do want to have some sun thru the glass on days that are not crazy hot. What I'm after is a way to add some material to the shade itself so that when closed it's a total eclipse of the sun.

I mean... the panoramic roof is one of the features that your paying extra for, it doesn't make much sense to block it up completely.

Found out my pano roof just has the factory tinted glass so I'm having 15% tint put on it today. Should make a big difference. I'm getting the Pinnacle Llumar tint installed.

Okay, it is in the low 80s and beautiful clear skies. I drove home and with the tint on the panoramic roof it makes a huge difference. I'd say it is at least 50% cooler inside the car and I can leave the screen open and look at the sun through the glass and it isn't too bright.
Honestly, I've been driving this car for 2 weeks now and I constantly have the AC running with the blower on level 3 or higher. This afternoon it cooled off quickly and I felt like I don't need cooled seats in this car for the first time since owning it. My car is white with black leather interior.
Definitely get a quality tint. I'd recommend the top of the line LLumar 15% as it still lets light in but cuts out UV and much of the heat. I think 5% would be too dark.
I had them tint the door glass too. The dealer I bought the car from had removed tint from the doors (probably as dark as the rear glass 15% or so) so I had them done at 35% which I would like to do the rear glass in too as I think 15% is too dark personally. 35% all around looks great though. Anyway, here are some new pics.

Strange. I live in Houston, TX, and I find the shade does it's job just fine. BUT, I also rarely park the car outside of a garage. So it is never really hot.

I live in VA and with consistent 90+ degree sunny summer days the AC has no issues cooling the interior quickly. I keep the sunshade in place most times in the summer (with just factory tint on roof). But I also have side and back windows tinted which certainly helps.

I left the shade open all day yesterday and the car didn't feel overly hot when I got in it at 5PM to drive home. Temp was 90 degrees here yesterday afternoon when I left working the car was not parked in the shade.
I generally leave the shade open now.

My car is in for it's 10k mile service and the loaner they gave me is a 2017 C300 Coupe. The sun shade is SIGNIFICANTLY darker than the one in my E400, almost completely blacked out, love it. Not a fan of the C300 Coupe however at all, interior is very updated but I hate it. Too much fake wood, and the controls are weird. They attempted to make it look high tech and although it does I just find it cold looking. Worse is the iPad they glued to the top of the dash, butt ugly.

I don't care for the C-class either. I love my E550 Coupe.

Agreed. I don't much care what the usual loaner car looks like inside, because it is just a loaner. It is not something I'm going to have to live with long term. As long as the loaner runs it is fine by me.

It gets a bit warm here in summer and I didn't notice any difference between the E400 coupe and my C63. They are both hot in 40 degrees C but open the windows and roof, put on the air con and a few minutes later it's all nice again.
