Considering a 2014 e550 coupe
You too! Stay safe.
I guess what I want to know is why gut vs remove muffler? One seems like more work and money for the same result?

Honestly, it was just to see how different the acoustics would sound as some vehicles with gutted mufflers give a more throaty sound. Not the case with the E550. The money and work was of no concern, so I didn't mind paying to have it done as an experiment. Each modification done gave a unique sound, which was I wanted to do to help others, and give them more options.

When you removed the 2 resonators were you able to use one continuous piece of pipe? Looks like there is a bend in between the two resonators, wondering if a straight pipe will clear the brace.

I replaced the resonators with an X pipe, then straight pipe back. The shop did some bends to clear the brace, so any skilled shop should be able to do what you’re asking.

Any advantages/disadvantages of x-pipe over straight pipe?

Hi JDScott,

Great write up and super helpful ! By any chance do you remember the diameter of magnaflow 200 cell cats? 2.5" or 3"?

When you did a cat delete did you have a tune? I have a 2014 E550 and I wanna gut the cats but don’t know if it will cause the car to run funny or throw a check engine light??
