Question Have you had a major mechanical failure?

I am investigating third-party (e.g. Fidelity, CarChex) exclusionary warranties for my 2013 E350 Coupe. Unfortunately my car does not qualify for any type of MB warranty.

My personal experience with a Fidelity exclusionary warranty for my prior car (Audi A6 Avant) turned out to be a poor investment. I paid $4280 and put in less than $800 in claims.

I recently had a complimentary diagnostic service session at my local MB dealer for a software upgrade. My car was given a totally clean bill of heath by the MB technician.

Research on MBWorld and other sources indicate that the C207/A207 is reasonably reliable, when well-maintained. I have an excellent independent mechanic that specializes in European cars that I have used over 10 years. I accept that a Mercedes needs to be maintained.

Based on this information, it does not appear to make sense to purchase a third-party, warranty.

My question for fellow owners of the E-class Coupe and Cabrio: Have you have a major mechanical failure? If yes, what the the cost to repair?

Thanks in advance for your reply. Your information will help many of your fellow owners.

I look at an extended warranty as basically insurance against a potential major failure. Either mechanical or electrical in nature. It only takes one for the claim to easily exceed the price of the warranty. Since I also maintain all my cars quite well, I don't expect any future claims would rise to the level of equaling the cost of the warranty. It's strictly a peace of mind thing. By the way, so far zero claims.

I also have A 2013 e350 Cabriolet.

I had a timing chain tensioner fail, $2900 repair.

All but $100 was paid by the warranty (which I paid about $3000 for) and I have about 2.5 years left.

YMMV, but it was totally worth it for me.

If you're looking at a warranty price in excess of $4,000, I think I'd bank those funds in an interest-bearing account and just let them sit there. If you end up with a significant failure, pay for it out of the savings account; if you don't, then you've earning interest on several thousand dollars and haven't lost a penny. Just my .02

Thank you for you comments. I tend to agree with your analysis on the best course of action. Click on this link to see my experience and my analysis of 5 years of ownership with a Fidelity Platinum exclusionary warranty

My plan going forward is to set up a dedicated bank account for my E350 Coupe car maintenance. I will (1) bank the funds that I would have spent on and aftermarket, Exclusionary warranty and (2) set-up automated, monthly deposits to this account for on-going "wear and tear" maintenance.

My 27 year ownership experience with Audi's taught me that working with a good independent mechanic that specializes in German/European can really help with cost-effective car maintenance. I recently sold my Audi A6 to another Audi enthusiast who came to the conclusion that the car was in outstanding mechanical condition. I will use the sales proceed s to establish the dedicated bank account to my Mercedes maintenance.

This is my third Mercedes. The ‘11 550E coupe was preceded by a ‘92 400SE and an ‘85 190E. The mechanicals have never been a problem. It’s the electrical gremlins that “nickel & dime” you. And I mean “nickel & dimes” followed by “000”

Case use in point, the ‘92 - lease return bought with 40k and sold 5 yes later with 82k miles
- dash board goes bonkers - out-of-warranty and $1300
- evaporator goes south - out-of-warranty and $1500
(and that’s with MBNA picking up the parts and the dealer helping with the labor)
- faulty ignition combo switch - out-of-warranty and $1400

The 190E had issues with the ventilation/AC control module, a pair off window regulator and misc other gremlins.

I bought the 550E as a lease return with 17K miles with a year left on the warranty. It was “StarNet” qualified so I bought the 3yr/f75k mi. MB extended warranty. During the covered period, The warranty covered a faulty TPMS sensor.

But the car only has a bit over 30k miles. So..... I’ll throw (“roll” all you want, there’s no risk until their thrown) the dice.

As as a side note, my Porsche GT3 with 60k miles failed smog - “cat not ready”. $3000 - new cat from the fatherland, an oxy sensor and a ton of diagnostic time. Other than that, no issues to speak of (brake light switch) and a LSD rebuild (wear item if driven hard)

I have had 4 MB, 190E, 350 coupe, W204 C63 and now the E400 coupe. I have never had 1 mechanical problem with any of them. The C63 did have a
problem with it failing to obey speed signs, I think it was a pedal thing.

11 E350 Cab, 18 GLS450
I have a 2011 E350 Cab all stock and I have had no issues at all.. Just the oil changes and filter changes I have done myself. The savings at this point can pay for a major repair if needed. The car runs as good as the first day I got it new. Only item I did do myself was replace the battery cause I just wanted to since it was going on 5 years at the time...

Was the battery failing at 5 years or wasa this "preventative" maintenance?

What brand of battery did you install? What was the cost for the replacement battery?
