For the first time I installed my new roof rack and kayaks on my Coupe. While I have seen a few bike carriers on C, E, & S Coupes, I have not run across a Coupe carrying Kayaks. I was curious how others "tie down" the front and back. Each boat is strapped in two places to the carrier-- but I like the front and rear secured too.
I have never seen them on a coupe or sedan. One word of caution is I notice in the pic the tie downs are under the trunk and hood, assume your driving at slow speeds, but if you intend on driving high speeds I would be concerned of denting or bending of the hood and trunk where the straps are over time. I would also make sure the straps are covered with a cloth to not scratch paint.
I use a Malone 2 kayak carrier on my SUV and I do not use tie downs given the kayaks are cradled and secured with 3 straps to the rack itself. Never had issues etc.
That's a valid point, but I only use these boats locally. I'd probably never travel more than 25-30 miles with them and only a couple of times a month. I drive 65-70 MPH with the boats on the rack; no problems. And the sun roof opens with the rack & boats on the car, so it is easy to keep an eye on things while traveling.
It takes about 15-20 minutes to take the boats and the rack off the car.
