E550 Coupe BiTurbo rattle: normal or not?
Picked up the car this weekend. Amazing!
Unfortunately last night I’ve noticed a rattle upon startup for a few seconds after sitting for a few hours. Luckily car was purchased from Carmax. I’ve got a 2012 E350 coupe with a camshaft adjuster issue that makes a rattle on startup. Hope this isn’t the same thing. Can anyone shed some light on this noise?

My 2013 E550 used to do the same thing. I believe it was the cam chain tensioners. It was fixed under warranty several years ago. They said it was pretty common but my other two never had the issue.

This is common, and there is a Xentry document that shows check valves as the fix. They keep some oil in the head so it stays wetted for startup. See if you can get them to fix it, but many think that it sounds worse than it actually is.

I’m pretty familiar with this. 2012 E350 coupe had the same rattle. Carmax is fixing it under warranty for free
