2013 E550 Cabriolet; 2004 CLK500 Cabriolet Designo (sold)
New tire recommendations

My mechanic just told me that my tires have dry-rot and need to be replaced. These are the original Pirelli Pzero Nero tires on my 2013 E550 Cabriolet with 23,000 miles (not a typo!).

I also thought the ride to be a little rough with these tires, so rather than just buy new Pzero Neros, I am considering options. Consumer Reports rated these two highly:

- Pirelli P Zero All Season Plus
- Continental ExtremeContact DWS06

Any thoughts on these two options or others I should consider?

Thank you!

I was just in your shoes 2 weeks ago! My 13 E550 coupe with 40,000 miles on it was driving me crazy with road noise from the factory tires. I measured the tread depth on them and they were all about 4 - 5/32nds and the sidewalls were slightly dry-rotted. They were all dated coded Sept 2012. I called a high school buddy that is the VP of Automotive Services for a Big Box retailer, I started the conversation off as a joke saying that I wanted him to warranty replace the POS Michelins....lol. He's been my goto guy for tires since the 80's. He lives and breathes tires!!!! We got to yackin about replacing my tires and off the cuff he shocked me and for the first time in 30 years he didn't tell me to buy Michelins. He gave me an off brand recomendation that they are looking into offering in their warehouses. $372.00 for a staggered set-up. 2 weeks of driving so far and I'm impressed, I figured....what do I have to lose.....whatever tire I put on will be worn out in 20 -30,000 miles. . . Make them beat WalMart prices!!!

Those are some crazy prices for sure. I'm also in the market for tyres for my '11 E550 Coupe with 17,000 (not a typo) miles. I am leaning towards the Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 (R18 95Y). Unfortunately, I don't have the cajones to try an off brand, but I'd be very keen to hear of your mid/long-term impressions on the Milestars. I've been a Pirelli and Nokian guy for a LONG time with my Swedish cars. Now that I've gone full German in my garage, the 4-wheel vehicles get Michelins and the two-wheel toy gets BS.

I'm originally from Mountlake Terrace, WA. Lived in the Puget Sound for 45 years....... I'm pretty sure if you purchase them from Discount, they give you a 30 trial/exchange. I was a diehard Goodyear guy when I was driving American cars and racing, so I know how ya feel. I owned my 2000 CLK430 for 15+ years and tried every national brand of tires on it during the 250,000 miles. The CLK came from the factory on P-Zeros and they were the first replacements. Staggered set-up, they lasted 20,000 miles until traction control was engaging in the 9 months of wet streets. Second set were Goodyears....forget the series, but I bought them from the Goodyear distributor up on Capitol Hill. They were the same series the WSP were running on their Crowns and 5.0s. Same thing......staggered set and lasted about 25,000 miles. Bridgestones next from a buddy who owned a Firestone store in Fed Way.......same thing.....but 30,000 miles and he warranty replaced all four with another set 22,000 miles. Bought another set of Bridgestones prior to moving to Alabama as the previous set was down to about 6/32nds on the rears and I had no idea what kind of tires the land of Forest Gump would have. 30,000 miles again after I got here the Bridgestones were done. Discount finally open a store here and I decided to give them a try....they matched the Bridgestone price on a set of Continentals. Great tire.....good traction.....quiet.....and 60,000 mile warranty. I put about 18,000 miles on them before hitting a pothole on I-65 @ 75-80 mph. Two blowouts.....two bent/crack AMG wheels beyond repair.......I just couldn't see putting another $3000 + into the car, since it was maybe worth $4000. I drove around for almost 6 months on the fullsize spare and one as good as it could be repaired AMG wheel. I retired and decided that against my wife's wishes I was going back to Fords! I has involved in an accident while driving my Ford Lightning when a driver blew a stop sign and I broadsided him in the passenger door @ about 55 mph. Still to this day I remember nothing from that accident, only that I was unconcious for 13 hours in Valley Hospital in Renton. I found a repo'd Shelby GT350 with 6000 miles on it close to Atlanta and drove the CLK down to buy it......Even with a $1000 deposit to hold the car, by the time I got there the next day it was gone! I was PO'd to say the least! Not wanting to drive the CLK 4 hours home I looked up the address for a used European dealership in Atlanta that I had seen a lot of high end MB and BMWs. Walked the lot and didn't see anything that I wanted to spend money on and a saleman approached me. I told him the CLK was in need of being put out to pasture and I wanted to replace it with something 2 doors....V8 etc. He took me out behind the lot to their trade-in lot and showed me a just traded in 13 E550 coupe, 32,000 one owner. The lady traded it for a white 2014 E Cabrio. I drove it back to Alabama 2 hours later. It had the OEM Michelin Primacy's on it that all were 2012 date coded. like I said they were worn out and the hardness and noise was driving me nuts! Everything I looked @ to replace them were $1000 +. The Milestones were 1/2 that out the door mounted, balanced and TPS serviced. What was really impressive is that all 4 wheels and tires only took between .25 -.50 ounce weight each to balance. I stood over them and watched and cleaned all the old weights and adhesive off from the old tires. I've drove them pretty hard in town and hit 122mph on I-65 and I'm impressed so far!

SIR in Kent

I've been a Discount client for ages but never had to invoke their rather generous return policy, but you're right - remember this lady?

LOL.....the Federal Way store actually had someone throw a tire thru their window around 2010. I stopped in for them to mount new tubes and a new pair of slicks and one of their windows was boarded up....I asked jokingly....they showed me the security cam footage!
