Ive got a (used) 2016 e400 coupe with very low miles. It's been handling pretty good until recently. The first time, I was going around a sharp turn and the rear end got a little loose - street was dry. Second time, the road was wet when I was turning onto the highway, the rear end got really loose. I was not giving it much gas at all. We've had some heavy rain the past couple of days. Coming home today, it got loose on the interstate & didn't think too much about it - corrected it and went on for about 30 miles....got on the highway to my house, it wasn't raining too hard and temperature was low 60's, but it felt like I was driving on ice. I had to slow down and that "feel" never left. Scary feeling. Any experience with this?

First thing is how are the tires? Worn tires effect traction. Also, light rain can also make the streets slippery. Also, is the traction control on?
Traction pretty much comes down to tires. It's the only thing between the car and the road. If your tires are at 90%, I'm assuming you recently got a new set of tires. What tires did you get? It sounds like they are garbage. What you describe is common with budget tires. Low 60's is not something that even a proper summer performance tire couldn't handle. Now wet roads is a different story. Not all tires do well in the wet. New tires also need up to 500 miles to wear off the lubricants from the mold, so they'll be a bit slippery in the meantime.

They are Michelins. I bought the car in December and they were on the car - it only had 10k miles on it. I had a deer hit the Benz early last week and I had left skid marks while trying to stop. Didn't have this issue until then. Coincidence? I'm going to drop it off at MBofSM this afternoon and see if they can recreate it or maybe put on computer diagnostics (?!). Response is greatly appreciated!!

I see. Then my next question, how old are these tires? The last 4 digits of the DOT number on the sidewall tell you the week and year the tire was manufactured. Anything getting to 6 years and older is subject to replacement. As tires age they go bad.

Thank you!, they are 2015s. Got it to dealership and back tires are dry rotted on inner wall - really bad! Can you recommend a good high performance tire for her?

I had a suspicion those tires were past their expiration date. The summer high performance street tire of choice these days is the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. It's the successor to the Pilot Super Sport. Phenomenal tire and a marked improvement over the PSS in handling, grip and ride comfort. I've had them on my previous Audi RS5 and now on my C63S coupe. Wouldn't get anything else. I always order my tires from Tire Rack and then just take them to my indy or the dealership to mount. They come with 2 year free road hazard.

i find Continental Contact Sport to be pretty good however I only get between 15,000 and 18,000 kms off a set. I am in my 4 th set and they are needing to go shortly
I was just in your shoes 2 weeks ago! My 13 E550 coupe with 40,000 miles on it was driving me crazy with road noise from the factory tires. I measured the tread depth on them and they were all about 4 - 5/32nds and the sidewalls were slightly dry-rotted. They were all dated coded Sept 2012. I called a high school buddy that is the VP of Automotive Services for a Big Box retailer, I started the conversation off as a joke saying that I wanted him to warranty replace the POS Michelins....lol. He's been my goto guy for tires since the 80's. He lives and breathes tires!!!! We got to yackin about replacing my tires and off the cuff he shocked me and for the first time in 30 years he didn't tell me to buy Michelins. He gave me an off brand recomendation that they are looking into offering in their warehouses. $372.00 for a staggered set-up. 2 weeks of driving so far and I'm impressed, I figured....what do I have to lose.....whatever tire I put on will be worn out in 20 -30,000 miles. . . Make them beat WalMart prices!!!
