cigarette lighter works, but phone charger wont?

whats the deal with the lighter not charging the phone when the lighter works, so its not the fuse. i plug it into the 12V outlet in the glove box and it works fine. is there some trick to make this work?

my guess is it does not touch the center positive pin on the bottom center or maybe misses ground ring on outside?

Try a different brand and shape one

I'm looking at a 2012 E350 cabrio. I'm still amazed there is an ashtray and cig lighter. Is there a way to swap out the lighter for USB charging ports?

I have a 2016 e400 coupe and it still has the ashtray in the console, so I'm not surprised that the 2012 model has it. And yes, it feels like an anachronism in a modern car.

In mine, the actual ashtray can be easily popped out of the opening. I took it out and cut a piece of black rubber-like matting to fit in the bottom of the vacated space, and I keep my coiled charging cable there. I also removed the lighter itself from the socket and replaced it with a USB port adapter which I bought for a few dollars on eBay. It's disappointing that no such option was available from MB.

i was thinking if I buy this car I will replace the lighter with a USB port.
Also smokers don't use ash trays, they flick the fiery remains out the window.
