Dead ignition UK guy, UK car.

Hi Guys.

I'm pretty new to Mercedes with my current car being my first.

After a few months of no issues my 2011 E350 Coupe seems to have developed an issue this morning.
I used my car yesterday and it was fine but went out to go to work this morning and opened my door with the fob as usual but after the door opened the entire electrical system appears to be dead.
I have not gone any further with it or applied any checks but wondered if this is a regular issue?

Any input greatly received cheers

Given the colder weather nowadays, have you checked your battery’s CCA? If the cold crank amperage has dropped to the point that it can’t start anything then there is a good chance the battery is dead, and nothing wrong with the electrical system. I would start there first.

Cheers fella, I managed to get a bit of charge into my battery but upon attaching the charger on trickle the cars cooling or maybe heater fans were trying to spin up. I then locked and unlocked the car and turned the ignition on and the fans stopped but it was showing several faults including inoperative ESC. I put this down to low voltage and sure enough when I thought it had had enough charge it fired up very easily and all faults appear to have been rectified. The big question is what on earth took the battery to Zero in the first place? The battery does appear to be fine, starting the car effortlessly but I have bought a new battery now just in case.

Lead Acid Batteries lose their ability to hold a charge when they get older so chances are you have an old battery. Change it as soon as possible to avoid problems going forward. Without proper power the electronics can also become faulty. Happened to an older Mercedes I have where ECM had capacitors blow on the board and my theory is because the battery was supplying insufficient power or spiking on its voltage causing havoc. So avoid all that and change the battery every 4-5 years. Many of the error codes can probably be cleared with a new battery.
