2012 E350 at idle - normal or not?
Hi all,
I’m looking at a 2012 E350 Coupe, is this a normal noise at idle?

Thanks!

Thanks @konigstiger !
I think that my video may make it sound worse than it is but the ticking is what got me thinking!

@konigstiger any thoughts on what the ticking might be?

My '13 E350 sounded like that. It wasn't really noticeable with the hood closed, but when open I wondered the same thing. My M278 eng, pretty much the same with two extra cyls, also makes that sound. I guess it depends on how loud it is, which is hard to tell in a vid. I always assumed it was the valve train and/or fuel pump. How loud = an issue I don't know but neither of my engines became louder over time.
I assume the fuel pump and valve train are normally noisy since they put sound dampening rubber over them. I suppose konigstiger would know more than me but fyi my 2 cents.
Thicker oil helps tame eng noise. I add thicker oil and Lucas to mine, which certainly won't silence it, it just helps.

Thank you @Chevota , this is the first time in a long time I’ve bought a car that is more than 3 years old! Shopping for my son, looking between a C class and maybe an E.

Thanks for the info and offer @konigstiger , I decided to move on from that particular vehicle. There were some other things that the Sales Mgr and I couldn't come to an agreement on, like warped front rotors (was an example), the price wasn't that good!

If that was offered by a dealer, it was smart to pass on it. The engine covers were filthy, suggesting it has been neglected. From the sounds, I'd bet the motor oil was pretty old and dirty. I can't believe it was offered for sale without any prep.

What’s odd is that they are willing to let you take it out unprepared, I can see past the dirt, I enjoy detailing, but the overall condition was more of what I would expect from a used car lot, not a dealer. Note, it was not a Mercedes dealer, is was another brand.
