First wheel/tire damage (road contructiom)

I was washing and detailing my E400 yesterday and when I was drying/wiping down the wheels a slight imperfection in the wheel lip caught my eye. After a few seconds, I realized it was a slight bend in the wheel lip. A closer inspection revealed a cut in the wheel projection rib on the tire. The side wall isn’t cut, but the protection rib on the tire tried its best.

i suspect it was a section of road in town that was cut for utility work, it was recessed from the rest of the road.

off to the dealer for a new tire, and will see if the damage warrants repair/replacement of the wheel. The wheel isn’t obvious, the light reflects slightly different, so if the inside of the wheel is ok, I may just use as-is.

what a pain, PA roads.

Certainly hope you've got the wheel and rim or is it tyre and rim insurance from the dealer...

Nope, I opted out of the coverage. I hope this is the only time I have to deal with this, but everything I read says otherwise. Tire is $300 and will see if the wheel is repairable. The dealer has a service provider that comes by Wednesday.

New wheel is about $750 (-$560 on eBay).

There was one great thing about driving my F250, it shrugs off most pot holes or road construction.

Thanks,
OJ

Unfortunately, you'll find folks on the forum who have had to replace tyres and rims multiple times. This adds up if your roads are poor. I'd get the insurance if possible. Hope things work out well for you.

I finally snapped a few photos. It’s raining so maybe not the easiest to see. The letter opener is used to point out the location of the damage.

Looks like a small cut but can't determine depth from the pic. It doesn't seem as if the rim has any damage. I would guess that the rim is OK but tire should be replaced. Good luck! Let us know how you make out.

Car done. $505 total for new tire and wheel repair including tax. Less than I expected. I'll see what it looks like when I pick it up.

thanks

OJ - thanks for sharing - I have a MY18E400Cab and at the time choose to not purchase the wheel coverage ... am still debating that decision with myself ... anyway, glad to hear you'll be safely back on the road today Enjoy Steve

Yup, no problem. When the dealer offered the wheel insurance, I figured I was good enough to avoid potholes, it is harder than I presumed here in the north east. Still, I think the coverage was $1500’or so for 3 years (someone can correct me please). As long as I don’t exceed 3 incidents in 3 years, I still come out of.

That said, I am starting to wish I had opted for the insurance.

Time will tell.

Sounds like a good outcome. I've had a few wheels repaired at the dealer and all came out perfectly...undetectable. Thanks for the update. Happy motoring.

E400
I have a 2016 E400 coupe.....just recently hit a rock that I couldn't avoid...damage rim and tire...replacement rim and tire cost me $1450......I too opt not to get the wheel tire insurance.....I am now trying to see if I can go 40s in rear...the car comes with 40s in the front but 35s in the rear...is this possible? I also live in the North East.
