New E400 Convertible - Stereo Lacked Punch - NOT ANYMORE!
So I went from a 2008 CLK550 with the Harmon Kardon sound system with the powerful subwoofer ports right between the rear seats to my new E400 with the Burmeister system. It was very nice. The mids and highs were PERFECT, better than the HK, and the low bass was decent, but the mid bass was nowhere near as punchy as the old HK system.
So I took it to SoCal Auto Sound here near Newport Beach and he said he would tap into the sub output and put a sealed box with two 10 inch speakers in the space behind the fold down rear seats and just under the convertible top cover.
So I have lost about 4 inches of trunk space, and the ability to pass items through to the passenger compartment (which I don't ever see using) and gained an unbelievably deep rich and powerful sound that explodes all around you, without seeming heavy or boom-y.
I'm sure most people who fit this car's target demographic don't want or need this kind of audio power, but I love it, and thought I would share it with you in case you wanted to do the same...
So now the back seats have a massage function as well...

Thanks!
I wanted it to be as hidden as possible. They took a lot of effort to make that box fit perfectly and have enough volume for the speakers to resonate.

It was a 700 watt continuous, 2000 watt peak amp. There is a small adjustment knob just above where the driver's right knee is to select how much power the amp supplies and put the amp somewhere above the passenger's feet to minimize the length of the cables from the battery to the amp (but it's all completely hidden). The amp is only powered when the engine is on to prevent battery drain (which the installer says can happen fast with this "rolling computer" as he calls the car).
With the engine off you can still listen to the normal factory sound system and sub.
Make sure they leave at least 1 inch between the speaker face and the backs of the rear seats so the speakers can move freely.
Total cost $1,700
