I hope someone knows and can post the details of what really happened here. What was the cause. Was it fuel, the battery etc. It's troubling if this car was just driving down the road and spontaneously caught fire.

Anyway, i’m the guy from the UK, it’s actually a year to the day when it happened to me. I thought I’d search to see if anyone one else had been affected after being reminded by my timeline of my sad day.
how it happened to me:
I was driving, with my wife and daughter on a motorway. Luckily I noticed the smoke entering the cabin early and was near an exit. We got out safe, called 999 and within 7 mins the fire service arrived to put it out.
i consider myself and MB lucky that it happened where it did. It may have been smouldering for hours before, I have to say we did notice a strange odour when accelerating, like a brake or clutch smell. It was 100% connected to this. This odour did occur on other occasions before the event, always under acceleration.
MBUK initially (after trying to classify it as an RTA) appeared to be in full care mode, but once in possession of the car pretty much tried to hush me up, treated me with absolute contempt and offered no concern for the safety of my family or others for that matter. they eventually refunded me, but once Daimler got involved it was as mentioned covered up. They would not accept it was a fault either.
i went through a fair bit of stress and trauma trying to sort this, it was corporate bullying at its best.
my car was only 1 month old.
