It is more like a prank than with scamming intentions, OP's friends only benefited from a laugh and not any monetary gains for example. Unless I understand the definition of a scammer incorrectly, please correct me if so.

This was in fact fake. How do I know? Because it was my "friends" that punked me.
While telling my story to a few friends last night, they almost died laughing at me and then admitted that they, in cahoots with someone who wasn't there, had in fact hatched the scheme to bust my ***** over the fact that I paid $80,000 for a car with missing parts.
Have to admit that was a hell of a prank. They got me, but good.
Sorry if I've caused any consternation on this board. I'll go away and shut up now.

OP, you can finally enjoy the full experience of your vehicle and no longer have to be laughed at by your friends (Thanks to forum member Eaton for the update on this):

Hermes chip update 6/10/2022
All,
The Hermes chip's are trickling in and I've received my service bulletin and set appointment for install and another service campaign.
I will call two days prior to insure the chip is in hand.
They are giving a loaner car for the day and told me its been taking them 3x longer than the letter indicates.
