Any way to disable adaptive cruise?
There is no published way of doing what you ask and I suspect Mercedes logic is based on including the driver in the system in terms of safety analysis.
In standard cruise control the driver has to monitor the distance to the car in front and brake or overtake as appropriate.
In Distronic, the driver has to monitor the car in front to ensure Distronic is sensing the distance correctly. If it is not, you have to brake or overtake as appropriate. While monitoring you are able to overtake if your speed reduces and it is safe to do so.
Switching off the distance sensing function once it's installed is directly affecting safety "you will hit slower traffic if you don't take avoiding action" wheh inactive as opposed to "you will hit slower traffic if distance sensing fails" if active.
Therefore I suspect rigorous German engineering decided that you can't allow the user to deliberately degrade safety.
I think a failure mode when adaptive is unable to work would be useful, along with a big caption on the instruments / HUD. I don't believe that exists either.
Perhaps a generation or two down the line the car will say "your speed is slowing; would you like me to overtake when safe?"
I have a 2023 E450 Cab w/o Distronic. I had Distronic in my 2015 SL400 and I also frequently had the experience of following a car for a while before I realized that I'm going slower than intended. When I got the E450, I was a little disappointed at first that it didn't have Distronic. After driving cross country last month, I've decided that regular cruise control forces me to pay more attention to what's going on around me. This is a good thing.

Yes, sometimes the car ahead of me slows down and as a result slows me down, but I'm not sure how one doesn't notice that. In those cases I indicate to overtake and as described above, it will then automatically change lanes and accelerate back up to the set speed. Maybe I notice it more, because I generally set my speed 10-20mph above the speed limit, so a car that is barely driving the speed limit will cause a noticeable slowdown on my part.
