I recently purchased a 1982 300DT from the original owner. The car is in amazing shape mechanically and came with the paper work from every repair made in the last 27 years. That being said... I was cleaning it today and i tore up the carpeting and found that on the passenger side the floor is cracking under the mat. The metal pan has no rust on it, but the hard plastic-like material (appoximately 1/2 in. think) on top of the pan is completely coming off. Is there any way to re-install this material, is it necessary, is it a sign of worse things to come!? I noticed in the back under the mats there is just metal, no plastic on top.
Also there is a small rust spot on the rear of the car above the tire (its a florida car after all...).. is there anyway to stop this from getting bigger/worse?
Thanks for any info you can give. I am already completely in love with this car, but I am also a broke grad student and hoping i didnt get in over my head.

I should also add that it has been pouring here the last few days and there is no dampness in the car, so whatever is happening is not causing a leak.

Whats cracking is the noise insulation. Nothing you can really do about it except clean it all off and put new material down.
