300D excessive smoke and extreme hard nailing noise.
Driving at 30mph, the vacuum pump went. Immediately excessive exhaust smoke. I mean wafts of it. It's so embarrassing I don't want to drive it any more.
My mechanic replaced the vacuum pump. It's running, but the exhaust smoke (mostly black) is incredible, reduces a bit when warming up.
When cold, the engine's nailing diesel noise is so loud you need to stick fingers in your ears. I have never heard such a rough diesel noise. Sounds like a truck now.
I'm pretty sure that engine's dead. But I'd be curious to know what happened.
The vacuum pump broke, and there were metal splinters.
Did they get into the engine somehow and destroyed a piston?

The piston rings were actually OK, and the oil consumption was low.
I think the smoke from the vacuum pump breaking down clogged the injectors.
The blow-by is still not that bad, and oil consumption is still low - which probably wouldn't be the case if the piston rings were bad.
The old mechanic took the timing chain off and back on - maybe he messed up the injection pump timing.
