Ignition issues
Just bought a '78 240D that didn't come with a key, so had one made. It only works for the ignition for some reason, but it won't turn past the glow plug light. I was reading somewhere that it means the wheel lock needs replacement and if I turn the wheel and lock it, it'll turn over. Is it as simple as that, or more to it? I'm having the guy who carved the key for me come back later and make sure he carved it correctly... but if the key wasn't cut correctly, would it even turn turn to where it is now? I don't want him to come if it isn't the key's fault.

If you go to the Dealer and bring your car registration and the VIN number (make sure they are the same as your actual Vin number) they can supply you with a new Lock Tumbler and a new key that will open everything.
When the car was new it came with a Key that would open everything and a Valet Key. The Valet key will only work on the doors and the Ignition.
Most often it is the Lock Tumbler that goes bad but I have read of cases where the Steering Wheel Lock it self had gone bad.</p>What some have done is to remove the Lock Tumbler and use a Screwdriver to Start and Run the Car until you are satisfied that the Steering Wheel Lock is OK. If when using the Screw Driver the Steering Wheel Lock has issues you know it is the Steering Wheel Lock.
