1985 280TE Wagon Overheating

Hello all. My 1985 280TE European spec M110 gas engine wagon just recently started overheating. I also must admit that I am not too mechanically inclined. I have a couple questions on where to start troubleshooting. I noticed that the electric auxiliary fan does not kick on. Should it come on or does it only come on when the A/C is on? Also, once I figure out where the thermostat is should I just go ahead and replace it? Here is a little more info that may help. Once the temp has pretty maxed out I let the car sit for 1 hour or more I removed the radiator cap and the radiator seemed pretty full. There was a bit of hissing when I took the cap off. When I started the car the temp gauge immediately shot up to max. I would have thought that it would have somewhat cooled off in 1+ hour. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey there. I just bought a 1980 280TE.... did you ever figure out the overheating?
