Grilles and bumper painting for 300E sedan

Hey, I saw a 300E sedan today with colour coded bumpers, they had painted the black insert the same as the rest of the bumper and it looked great I thought ! What do you think ?

Also, want to do something about the grille, it looks a bit dated. What do you guys think of painting this the same colour as the body ??

Someone told me that a cool thing to do is to put a CE grille on a sedan, does anyone have any pics of this conversion ? Also, anyone got pics of cars with body coloured grilles.....Cheers !

the w124 all have the same grill where it is CE E convertible etc.

86-93 have the chrome grill, 94-95 have the updated hood.

Explain a little better what you mean what color do you want to paint the grill and what part of the grill do you mean? the grey insert only, or the whole chrome frame and the grey instert together?

Thanks Ashman, this guy who told me about the grille conversion was a German guy and he was saying something about changing to the grille that has the flat star type off the coupe, I was not sure what he meant either, but thought that this might have made sense to some of you guys.

About the grille painting, I was thinking of painting the whole thing including the chrome, the same colour as the hood. Was going to get a new non-genuine one and do it to that instead of ruining the original.

What do you think ?

I did the monochromatic paint scheme to my 300E. All moldings, the bumpers, side mirrors and the grill was painted blue. It makes the car look a lot bigger, because everything is the same color. The black "cuts off" the car. Be sure that the body shop uses a flex primer to the paint, to prevent chipping and flaking. Here is a pic of my 300E, with the 1995 E320 facelift and the monochromatic paint scheme:

There are more pics on my homepage.

the w124 coupe never had a different grill than the sedans....

Now the w126 coupe had a different hood and grill to the sedans along with the bumper... but that is talking about the S class (w126) here, not the E class (w124).

The guy you talked to either does not know about w124's, or he was thinking of a grill conversion kit.

I'm wondering if he's talking about the SEL grill hood conversion.
Those actualy look really good on CE's not the sedans though.

Colormatching the grill only looks good if the rest of your car is colormatched
and semi modded, lowered etc...

thanks Cali..... I have bitten the bullet and the car is now in the paint shop. The chrome grill surround is going to be hood colour and the grill insert black, I am keeping the chrome strips and the star and emblem in chrome, can't wait to see what it comes out like.

The car is modded, and I shall post some pics on here once it is finished since there are probably other people who would be interested in doing theirs, just can't find a pic of someones car that has actually done it.

Cheers !

Hey Ashman, thats exactly what I wanted to see ...thank you ! I am assuming that you did that on photoshop ? If you did, could you do the second photo down without the chrome strip around the outer grille surround, just leaving the star, emblem and the horizontal strips in the middle chrome please since this is what I have asked the paintshop to do. It looks good as in your second pic and I wish I had had this before I told them what to do, but now I fear it may be too late since the whole outer grille has been rubbed back and put into primer now and to rectify it I would need to have the whole thing re-chromed and start again.

actually my second and third pic was painted that way. I did it myself leaving that chrome around the insert and the chrome strips... It looked damn cool if you ask me. But was a serious Pain int he *** to do.

I have another chrome frame, I may do that to again, only shave the hood star and leave the laurel wreath badge.

The eyebrows are from Kamei. I got them through a friend who knows the vice president of kamei in germany, and he specially had them make me up a pair from the old mould from what I was told, as they werent making those anymore.

The grill witht hat chrome around the insert and the chrome insert strips, actually gave it a nice look, kind of made it look like the newer style hood.

I agree w/ you Ashman..

Those headlight flaps really appear that your sporting the 94-95 hood.
Very polished, clean flowing look. Ooh, i like the black grill painted on the borders w/ chrome in complete centers, looks super great job!
