Your favorite style w124 wheel?

What style(s) do you like and why? What size wheels do you like the most on your car. My new 91 300e is in super shape, but i want to bring it a little more current. I like several on tirerack.com in the 16" size. Im thinking a 5 spoke type(not too thin spoked though), or the 8 hole seen on the 94 and 95's.
Chrome is a definate no-no on a 124 for me.
Thanks for any/all thoughts guys! TG

W124's
Why are you considering 16's? Stepping up only an inch isn't fun.

At least go with 18's.

I mean...if you have to...17's.

Thanks for the reply Chris...

Question is/was...What is your favorite style w124 rim. It may not be fun to only go up an inch, but i like keeping this car as close to stock as possible.
So, again, what wheels do you all like for the w124. NOT size, but what style?
Regarding why 16"s? Because im interested in keeping as close to the wonderful, smooth stock ride as i can. I just turned 30 last fall, sold my cars, motorcycles, etc. Looks are not as important to me anymore. I still admire the w124 cars and dont much care for many new models of any make anymore.

Your quest to update your W124 with a newer look with 16's is almost impossible. Any 16's that were made around that era for the W124 looks outdated by today's standards. The closest would be AMG Hammers, even those only came in 17's. You'll have better luck with 17's,in fact have better handling and comfort with 17's then you will with 16's. Since you're not planning on lowering you can run 17's with fatter tires 235 45's.

If you want to stick w/stock, I'd suggest the 8 hole wheel in the machine/diamond cut finish w/clear coat. If you don't like it shiney, they also come in silver.

I personally like the AMG II monoblocks, although many on this forum feel they are "boring / plain" wheels, I think they are classy and look perfect on the car.

Another wheel that looks sweet are the ones on ANDRENY's car. I believe they are from the W210 model. It's the 5 spoke wheel.

I'd have to agree w/ChrisDPham regarding the diameter. If you're going to go w/aftermarket wheels, the general rule of thumb is to go at least 2 inches bigger than your stock size (therefore you should go with at least 17"). Otherwise just stick w/the stock size 15". There is really no noticeful difference in performance or "looks" from 15" to 16" except the price of the tires.

Whatever you decide, just make sure you're happy with your decision. After all, you're the one spending the money and driving the car...not us.

Man, the abundance of misinformation is hilarious!

AMG Mono II's definitely come in 16's and maybe even in 15's.

There is no rule of thumb for aftermarket wheels. Who told you that? If someone wants to go 1 up or 4 up, they can and it's up to them.

Tree Guy, do an AMG mono II in 16 if you can find a set....ebay perhaps?

My favorite wheel on the W124 are my Carlsson 2/6's but I know they come in 18+. You may be able to get 1/6 (one piece as opposed to 2) in 17.

Just my opinion!

I had the 1/6 in 1 piece in 17" they look great on the car. there is no lip though like on zorro's 2/6, it is very flat faced, which looks good. and it gives it an appearance of being bigger. Most people thought I had 18's when they were actually 17's.

The Mono II is a great looking wheel, very classy and looks great on the car.

personally whether you go 16 or 17, you will find lots of great looking wheels in either size.

Choose the size and style you like, after all it is your car.

I agree that there has been a little..

Misinformation thusfar regarding this thread. Im not looking to stay w/ stock wheels style wise. Just want an aftermarket that compliments the car while flowing with it as if they were meant to go on the car in the first place. As far as larger wheels, they may be more steering responsive, but i dont believe for a second that 17" wheels/tires will ride better than 15"stock or 16"s. Going up to 17 or 18 decreases your tire selections and in some cases your wheel selections as well. not to mention that your sidewalls are lower profile where you feel ALOT more road vibration and it lessons the ride dramatically. Ashman, im in MN, and like the 8 hole wheels because there is clear on all surfaces to repel the salt applied to the roads. The monoblock 2 style wheels are nice for this as well. Thanks for your opinions guys. After all, this is just a driver to go to appointments with, church, out to eat, dont have to park it in the corner of the lot, good clean reliable car that still looks great!

I really like the stock wheels on my 95 E420 - high sheen machine finish & clear coat. They look really sharp.. but they are 15" ...

If I could find the same finish 16" 8-holes, I would have bought them and put some 215/55/16 tires (fatter than stock). With the right offset (ET41 ~ ET46), the tires should not rub.

like I said you can find nice ones in both sizes...

I always liked these on the w124 in 16"

and these

these arent half bad

To me all those look pretty good. I really dig the borbet type e and the mille miglia bellos.

I was going to get those before I came across the 17" Carlsson. Which I have now switched out for the AMG Aero 1 Hammer Wheels.

Thanks Ashman! You and i...

Have about the same taste. The First two are quite nice and are 2 of my favorites. Tire rack seems to favor the ASA brand due to their affiliation w/ BBS, siting the build quality/finish better and more durable. The only issue w/ those two is that the lip is not cleared and could be not so good w/ the salt. A light just went off in my head, theres nothing wrong w/ having 2 sets of wheels/tires. I was planning on this anyways, so maybe ill get the 5 stars afterall. Im a detailing freak and these will be kept waxed/polished. Thanks for all your replies guys!

This the "general rule of thumb" that I use. When I was shopping for wheels for my car, a lot of "tuner shops" suggested this to me. As you stated you could go up any size you want. You could go with 4X4 tires and wheels if you want to...or go with 13" "lowrider wire wheels". Don't get your panties all tied up and up your AS S on this...what you're problem?! If you don't like my advice/opinion, ignore it.

If you want to get technical, the proper tires and rims depend on MANY factors. Just to name a few: Height and weight of the car, driving habits, road conditions, & speed the car will be driven at. If you want to go that route, then by all means hire an engineer to calculate all of these details. My advise..."KISS" - Keep It Simple S tupid.

I certainly wouldnt take offense...

Of Zorros comment regarding choosing rims and rules of thumb.
He was simply having a POLITE DISAGREEMENT, not pointing the finger at any member on this board. This is supposed to be fun, right?

Stock 8 hole

The 94 / 95 E320 stock wheels look the best.

I tend to agree Rusty...

Those 8 hole really do look nice and classic. Nice clean, straight forward
and traditional lines.

I like 16's and 17's on a W124. 18's look kind of weird to me.

I like my 16"

I am very happy that I went with the 16” wheels. I think the tires have a bigger impact on the ride than the suspension. I think my 205/55/16 tires must be more comfortable than 215/45/17 tires. I would love to be able to fit 225/50/16 tires, but they would rub on my car. Someday I might try adding the AMG spacer kit, so that I can try running the 225s. My AMG Monoblock wheels are 16” x 7.5” ET37. If I had ET41 or ET42, I may have been able to fit the 225s or maybe 215/55/16 tires without the spacer kit. The 225/50/16 is the same diameter as the 205/55/16, but the larger volume of air might add a little more comfort and I think the extra width would look great. The 215/55/16 is slightly taller than the 205/55/16, so the extra height should add back some of the comfort I lost when I went to the 16” wheels. The taller tires would also fill the fender gap a little more, so the car would look like it is lower.

My 16” wheels were advertised as AMG Monoblock Aero I wheels. They are supposed to be the “original” monoblocks, but they look a little different than the 17” version. I like mine better than the Aero II monoblocks, which are much more common.

king...Thanks for the..

Info and response! I just am comfortable w/ 16" on a 300e. Tires and wheels are half price compared to 17" sizes and i know ride quality will be better. Nice looking car you have there! tg.
