Question 89 300E Problems/Recommendations

Let me start off by saying I'm 17 and I have a 89 300e that I bought from my father. It has more than 290,000 miles on it, but is still running strong. Actually, the car can beat most of my friends. It beat a 92 mitsubishi, 00 acura integra (supercharged), and a Porsche (but I should probably say it was stick, and he stalled the car so I didn't really beat him ).

My dream cars, when I get more money, would be a 03 CL55AMG and 03 CL600 and 500E 92-94.

Anyway, beside the point, I know my car has lots of miles, but I think it should most likely last me through high school. It should last me forever as long as I take care of it, but I am having some problems that I want to get fixed and I might want to upgrade the car a little bit. Here are some problems:

1.If I accelerate, either forcing the car into 1st or just starting from 2nd, and I get to around 40mph, the car hesitates but then seems to come back around 50mph. This just started??? Probably because I drive the car hard sometimes and it has 290k miles. But still, anything I can tell my mechanic who can't figure anything out?

2.I manually wired rear fog lights into the car. The switch is now a seperate switch by my seat belt. I was wondering if there was any way to get the installed a bit more professionally so I can use the regular knob to pull out the thing all the way to get the rear fogs on???

3.I saw some supercharges for the 300e engine online. They say it increases the HP to 260. On my 290k, it probably already lost a bunch, but would that be worth it to install?

4.The car makes this stupid ticking noise. The frequency of ticks increases as the rpm increases. What is that?

I really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi,
Congrats on the car. I just got a 86 myself and am working on getting it to proper working order.

2. I didn't inspect the light switch when I had mine out. I guess I'll take it out and check again now I think you could wire it up to the original switch - I am not sure if MB had different switches for different setups, but I doubt it. I don't think mine has rear foglights either, but I'll check and see what I can find out.

3. I thought about this too. Check out Mercedesshop.com and the tech forum there. This was recently a discussion there with lots of links.

4. Sounds like worn valves to me. I am not expert but I'd check into that.
