Side Mirrors & Car Wash

My wife recently drove through one of those automated car washes at the petrol station, after which the driver side mirror seemed a bit off-angle.
When I had a closer look, the casing appeared to have popped open at the bottom and a 1 inch long heavy spring popped out. No matter what i did, the mirror unit will not sit "straight". All the electrics work fine, the casing isnt broken, the mirror is intact, its just this one little spring thats out.
My mechanic told me that the unit cant be repaired and that a genuine replacement side mirror is AUS $915 !!!! and that isnt fitted or painted.
Anyone know if its a simple job to remove the side mirror? Is it possible to fix without getting a new unit? Ive contacted a few online MB parts shops here in Aus and wreckers but Im hesitant to buy a non-genuine replacement part for $300 if i can get the current mirror "fixed".

why dont you remove the mirror and have a look, maybe spring is just out of place. If sojust pop it back in. If not see about getting just the spring from dealer and replacing. Hell of a lot cheaper the $300 / $900.

Thats what I want to do, but I have no idea where to start in removing the mirror. How are they fixed onto the body? Is the bolts/screws under the rubber boot on the door? Do I need any special tools ? Thanks...

On the inside of the door you should see the little triangle piece of leather next to your window corner on the opposite of the mirror. It is held in place with clips. You need to remove that cover and under you will see the screws you need to remove inorder to remove the mirrors. Becareful removing the back cover with the clips, so not to break them otherwise you will need to get a new cover. After that you should be able to see what the problem is with the mirror.
