I've found a 500E, in the next town! ADVICE PLEASE

I have been looking on and off for a 500E for some time. I had ordered a door seal from local MB dealer, happen to be on their webpage looking for phone number, moused to inventory out of habit.

Found a 1992 500E with 110,000 on it. They are asking 28,800.00 - I told them they were so far from market value it wasn't funny. I drove the car. It's the 2nd one I've driven. Very tight. So quiet and refined, but powerful. 90mph sneaks up on you pretty fast.

It has had a lot of dealer maintained work done, they have records. 1 owner, MD in his late 60's - traded it for an SL.

New factory rims, door dinges repaired, cosmetically exterior is a 9 out of 10.

Interior has some minor flaws, two or three burn marks on driver side window gasket, but car doesn't smell like smoke. Driver's side seat bolster is a little rough, needs stiching repair, mb dealer said they would take care of it.

Car was running a little hot, main fans were not kicking on, they said it was a relay.

I have a friend who is a certified benz tech who can go over it with me. How much should I offer, they are hot to sell it, they don't do ebay or autotrader. I left yesterday telling them that it was worth less than 20k and to call me if they were interested in talking. Sure enogh they called me.

Suggestions? I know it's been a slow time for 500E's -- why is that??

Help me out guys.

Maybe it's slow cause gas is kind of expensive.

Is that car really worth more than 8 or 10K?

Why don't you ask the seller how they came to their conclusion that the car is worth what they say it is? If they have no basis in fact give them your equally ridiculous offer and then ask them if they want to get realistic and sell it.

Worth more than 8 or 10K? Yes! Worth 28,800? Definitely not! I found a '94 E500 by me with 60,000 miles originally bought by BJ Armstrong of Chicago Bulls and then by Texas oil billionaire Marshall family of Anna Nichole Smith fame for only a grand more than what that dealership is asking. lol They shouldn't be asking any more than 14 or 15K. Good find though. Sounds like it's in good condition.

$28.8k for a 500E w/ 110k mi.?

If it's really THAT nice then I guess it might be worth it.. only if it's got the following really expensive items done tho

Rear Suspension Accumulators
Engine Wiring Harness
Evaporator and all the vacuum actuators.

but I don't know.. unless the interior is also immaculate.. it's too much!

Try low $20k instead.

Give these guys a call
www.hatchandsons.com - they had a nice 500E for less money than that.

That one was quite a driver..

8-10k? 10k tops????

Some of you obviously have no idea about the heritage and rareity of the 500E. 40% of the parts different than the 300E and 400E, collaboration between porsche and mb, built in the porsche factory. Just over 1500 brought to north america over the 3 build years (92-94). It is an unbelievable machine with a large following and market demand keeps it as one of mb's least depreciating models.

I'd offer 21k and see what happens, 8-10k is an insult to the W124.036

I hooked up a bud with a 92' with about the same mileage not oo long ago, lil more actually at 118K.....he got it for 13,100$, from a Benz dealer here in CT.

Car was maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10. (with some detail work it'll be a 9) At this age and that mileage they will need big $$$ in maint. so have that in mind and make that a point to the seller. On the other hand 110K miles the motor itself is really just broken in IMO, other than the normal maint items at 120K which tend to scare folks away because it isn't cheap.

Make sure you get the car nice and hot driving it....LH mode (limp home) should be apparent (when hot) if there is a problem , and there will be soon if there isn't. Trust me.

Check the motor wiring harness(es) real closely !! Weakest point on the cars which cause a ton of problems.

I agree. I paid $25K for mine 2 months ago. '92 with 55K miles, all documented MB service. I will eventually have to do the engine wiring harness($503.00), but everything else appears to be perfect.

I agree. I picked up a '92 500E two months ago for $25K. It has 55K miles, and full documented MB service history. It was completely stock with the exception of 18" Mono II's. I'll have to replace the wiring harness at some point($503.00 harness alone), but everything else seems to be perfect. I just need to find something good to remove the old cosmoline off of the engine.

On a lot, the most i...

would give is $18k provided that ALL, and i mean all records accompanied the vehicle!! There are alot of folks even on a MB site who have no clue what this car is. And $8-10k is an absolute insult to this world class, one of the best sedans ever created in the world EVER! The car will need to be thrown some minor/major maintenance w/ those miles and is worth no more than $18k as ive found several of these for associates of mine and understand this car well.
