Have him check the emmissions controls. My car was doing the same thing, reset the lgiht, came back on a few days later, reset it came back on after a few days. car ran fine with the light on and had no problems. my mechanic changed some hose related to the emissions system and all was well after that.

Check Engine Light
When problem present, communications and engine management fault codes are stored in the diagnostic module. You need a hand held computer reader to reset the check engine light but its may come back "on" within a few days. Next time ask him for the fault code than you know what is the problem. Some common problems are O2 Senor, Kickdown Cable, Electronic Accelerator Control, etc...
Per the E-Class Owner's Bible, "the electronic accelerator control unit is known to cause problems on 400E and 500E car with ASR. Symptoms are loss of power and an illuminated CHECK ENGINE Light..."
Good Luck!

Nah...the RennTech stuff won't make the light come on. Get the codes like they said above. You can even make you own code reader from Radio Shack parts (search the Mercedeshop forum for a DIY)
Could be a ton of things electronic related. I will say if the wiring harnesses haven't been done...then do them first before changing every little switch, module and sensor. Also first check the batterys output and the volt regulator (which you can't replace alone; need whole new alt).
You CAN reset the light by disconnecting and re-connecting the battery...but I don't recommend doing it that way....

On the drivers side, in front of the ECU/CAN bus storage box is a rectangular black with a cover on it, there should be a push button and an LED inside it. If you push the button in for a couple of seconds and release, the system should cycle through and display the error codes, basically a series of red blinks that you need to decode to determine why the check engine light is coming on. You can also hold this same button in for about 20 seconds, release, then turn the car on/off, this should clear the check engine light.
