Question Cold Running much faster E320 Coupe

I have a 1995 E320 Coupe (about 120K miles). I had everything done including head gasket, wire harness, all filters, sparks, mass air sensor, after market catalytic converter, trans torque sensor, but it still lacks the performance. My father has a 1994 e320 sedan (160k) that is a joy to drive. It hauls *** and burns rubber on occassion.

I found that when I start driving it after a cold morning or if not driven for a couple of days, it runs great. But once it warms up, it is lazy!

ANY THOUGHTS?
Ivan.

Where are you based?

If in Europe, the European models have a little advance retard switch up near the battery so that you can select the correct retardation depending on the fuel you use.

It might be that yours has been incorrectly set with the ignition retarded which will result in much reduced performance. If you are in the US, you get cr@p fuel all the time so you dont get this luxury

is 91 octane rich enough? thats all i put in... anyways. i heard that that retard thing was a hoax. i know that completely removing the resistor puts it to the slowest retard... but i don't know about those for the least retards....

1991 300E
I removed the resistor completely from my 1991 300E and can tell a noticable difference between before and after. I always run 93 oct. and don't have any issues with pinging. How does removing the resistor retard the ignition more than with it in?

E320 Coupe
Ivan

Until car reaches full operating temperature the ECU parameters are in fixed mode.
After that the temperature sensor triggers the variable parameters which are needed to ensure the engine performs under all load conditions.

You should plug into the diagnostic socket and see if any fault codes have been triggered - it may be the car is going into 'limp home' mode which limits the engine revs to around 3200 rpm.

When it is performing badly, will it rev above 3200 rpm ?

Regards

95 E320 Cabriolet, 108K
LnkPrkSoldier, I notice those links talk about the M102 and M103 engines. The 95 E320 has the M104 engine, which has a knock sensor. This is a feedback feature that will adjust the engine's ignition timing to optimize the fuel presently being burned in the engine... conversely, it also prevents engine damage from preignition caused by bad gas. There is no resistor to remove... no need for the resistor since the ignition timing is optimized.
