Does the 500E take 9004 headlight bulbs?

I searched, and I saw that other W124's were using 9004 bulbs for the headlights. I am sick and tired of my dim headlights and want to invest in some PIAA xtreme white 9004 bulbs. I just wanted to make sure these are the right ones before I buy them! I am under the assumption I can just swap the bulbs out without any other modification, right? BTW, I don't have euro headlights, if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Yes, the DOT-spec headlights equipped on the pre MY 1994 E500s use 9004 light bulbs. I say, it's probably not worth buying those $60 bulbs but if you really want to they will work.

Thanks a bunch Holson! I would like to get HIDs for my 500E, but I think they cost too much. I'll see what happens with these PIAA Xtreme whites...thanks again!

I had PIAA Xtreme White's for my car when it had 9004 bulb housing, now I have H4's since I put in Euro's and I got PIAA's again. Love how they look. Then again, they still aren't HID's...but the PIAA's are just temporary.

Here's a very informative site regarding automotive lighting. One thing to note is that the 9004 uses a transverse filament, the worst for projecting light in a focused pattern. This design also limits the throw of the light down the road.

Lighting FAQ

The Euro headlamps I bought for my 300E us a bulb which has an inline filament and give much better light.

Head over to Ecstasy's Lights Forum on the 500E ...

Also, rammbs has installed HID lights into his low-beam lights.

Well, I brought my PIAA bulbs to be installed and also get an oil change this morning, and the MB service center manager told me they wouldn't install the bulbs for me because the PIAA bulbs melt the harness. Has anyone heard of this problem? I thought PIAA bulbs were pretty safe--they've never melted anything on my other cars. Thanks in advance!

Hmm...what he said about PIAA's isn't true. I've had mine for 3-4 months now and no problems at all. You'll only have problems when the light bulbs melt the harness when you're using cheap bulbs. It happened to me and I've learn from that experience where as I only had those bulbs for a couple weeks! You get what you pay for. You're pretty safe with it comes to PIAA light bulbs so no worries.
