Power steering pump leaking
Should I pay a shop to replace the unit or try it myself? They told me I would have to replace the whole unit and total cost would be about $1,000. Does that sound right? 400-500 for the pump and rest for labor?

It depends on what is wrong with your pump. If it's just seals you may be able to just replace the seals for as low as $7.

I don't know what is the fair price to change a steering pump, but $1,000 seems pretty high to me. I just changed the steering pump on my mom's car for $50. It was easy, but messy. I bought a used pump, but when that turned out to be a bad unit, I took it back and they took it apart in front of me and changed all of the gaskets (I think it was 3) at no extra charge...it took him 10 minutes. If you're a decent DIY, I say do it yourself. It'll take you 30min-1hr max if you have all the parts ready.
If you don't want to get dirty, try taking it to another shop for a 2nd opinion. For $1,000 that must include changing your sterring box too.
