Defogging the Windshield on My '95 E300D

I've got a question about defogging the windshield on my '95 E300D. When the front windshield fogs up (e.g., when it rains in the summer), can the climate system's windshield defog setting -- the airflow setting that directs air on the windshield -- be used to clear it? When I try this, after a few seconds of blowing cool air, it will start to blow very warm air; this of course only further fogs up the windshield.

A dealership I recently took my car to insisted that the defog setting is designed only to blow warm, not cool, air. Is that true? Should I instead run the A/C with one of the other airflow settings and the dashboard vents closed, so as to maximize cool airflow toward the windshield? Thanks.

Same this happens in my '93 300TE. It's very low mileage so I don't think it's malfunctioning. I believe it is designed to blow hot air. It does clear up the fogged windshield though. It blows hot air at max fan speed so it kind of forces you to shut it off after a few seconds. Does'nt seem to be the safest thing. Other cars I've owned blew cold air and you'd not saffocate.

I'm also inclined to think it's designed to blow only hot air. Thanks for the feedback.

Actually, the defrost setting blows a MIX of cooled plus heated air - but you only feel the heated air because it overpowers the cooled. The cooled air (though you don't feel it) serves to dehumidify and remove moisture.

My dad bought my car new and drove it for 8 years. He said he always had trouble keeping the windows fog-free. At this point, I'm willing to chalk it up to a design flaw. Thanks for everyone's feedback.

08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
If the windshield fogs up even more in the defogger mode, make sure your AC compressor runs at the same time. If it operates properly, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds to de-fog. AC removes the moisture form the incoming air, and the heater heats it up to warm up the windshield.
