w124 buyers guide?
Hello all,
A newbie here with a first post. Does anyone have a "buyers guide" or a list of things to Really check out on the 91-93 300 & 400 e series? I have used the search feature plenty and found a little. I know there is a book I can buy, and I will soon.
I am looking at a sedan or a wagon, but Not a diesel. I will still probably take to the dealer for a buyers inspection and do a Carfax for sure. I just want to weed out the problem ones & only pay for 1 buyers inspection at the dealer. I do all my own auto work with OE parts.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I love this place already.
Thanks,
Ron

Yep I am ordering the book. But until it arrives I am looking for more info now, so I can start more reading. Other than the book... Is there any other info you can give on the problem areas?

(the 1991-1992 300E has the 177hp 3.0 liter M103 engine)
(the 1993 300E has the 217hp 3.2 liter M104)
400Es had the V8
Wiring harness (somehwere around 1992/1993, MB switched to environmentally-friendly insulation that deteriorated quickly - most should have been replaced by now)
Oil leak from headgasket (mainly on the M104)
Window switches (all W124s)
A/C evaporators (very expensive - located behind the dash)
Valve guides wear after 150K or so
Those are the major items that come immediately to mind....others can also provide some guidance.
My best advice is to have a thorough PPI done on a car you're interested in.
Good luck

Chappy listed some good stuff, he's right on it...also beware of the blower motors behind the dash...they are weak pionts on all W124s ....window regulators are breaking at this age too...did 2 on my 500E recently. Probably look at most everything with a microscope because at this age and mileages for old E-classes really most things that you'd look at in another or any 10-15 year old car needs to be addressed/freshened up.
But the w124 is a pretty easy car to work on IMO so don't be afraid if the car you find needs some maint. work. Parts prices aren't so crazy either, with any W124 model...great time to buy one cheap. W124 probably the best chassis ever built...arguably.
