Nardi SW in place of SRS equipped car???

Are there any technical problems with removing the driver side airbag from a 88 MB and replacing with a Nardi or other steering wheel?

Does the hub adaptor care if the car had SRS or not? Are there sensors that need removed afterwards?

I know a mechanic cannot do this due to laws so that is not an issue.

I wear my seat belt 100% so that is not an issue and an 18 YO air bag may or may not be 100% reliable anyway. Some have been known not to go off.

I know it has been done... but would I want to do it myself. not a chance. you probably need to remove the airbag computer and the srs light will most likely be tripped, so you would probably have to remove the bulb fromt he cluster too.

But it could be done.

Two parts to this question? First, where is the airbag computer and what is it's specific function? Timing, pressure??? Second, wouldn't it be easier to bridge the circuit to make it think the bag still existed?

Anyone?

I don't know about the "air bag computer" but the accelleramater that trips the air bag to go off is in the bulk head behind the ash tray and radio.

As far as illegal, it is illegal for a dealer or mechanic shop to remove any safety equipment. Owner can remove any part of car.

As far as safety, I wear safety belts 100% of the time so airbag is not really an issue with me. With belts, its only function is to scratch my face if it goes off.

And as for the air bag still working, I have seen many 20+mph head-on wrecks with 15+ year old cars and the bags did not deploy. There were several big threads about this last year on a couple of the fora but I can't recall which ones.
