18 inch rim question...

hey guys, I'm currently rim shoping for my TE

well I bumped into this great deal on some 18 rims...well the question I had is

1. I have no suspension mods (stock ride)
2. Should I do 18's or stick with the original plan of 17's?
3. And most importantly will this fit - 225/40 with an ET of 33 (Weird, ET 33 just sounds strange to me...dunno why ) ?

thanks guys, your imput will be make my decision easier.

The ET has to do with the rim dimensions, nothing with tires. More important if the 18" will fit is the rim width in coparison with the original 17". The ET-dimension is the offset (in millimeter) of the mounting plane of the rims. So for example if the originals have ET39 the 18" (ET33) will stick further out by 6mm (~1/4") The next step is to calculate the new circumference of the wheel to avoid the odo/speedometer reading is too far off. (~ 5% is okay)
arthmetic:
circumference (C): Diameter of the rim (18") plus 2*(hight of the tire shoulder=225mm*0.40) *3.14.
18"=457.2mm; hight of tire = 90mm

C=(457.2mm + 2*90mm)*3,14 = 2000.8mm. Compare this value with the current tire/rim you are driving and the result shall be between 1900 and 2100mm

What I was saying is that you need to make a few calculations to check the differences between the current geometry and the new, to figure out if the new wheles will fit into the wheel well and the odo/speedo readings are within an acceptable tolerance. The ET of the current rims is normally stamped on the inside of rims.

The lower the offset, the further out the wheels will get (towards fender lip), so +25mm offset is really close to the fender lip (well, on my car at least) and a +35mm offset insets the wheel more. Too much positive offset and you will have inner rubbing problems, not enough and your wheels will either stick out or rub your fender lips and/or bumper lips.

The 500E has a different offset than a 300E, CE, and TE. +25mm offset is going to stick way out on the fender unless you like the low rider look. The correct offset is +38mm but you can go between +35mm and +40mm depending on the width of the wheel. You can run as low as +30mm but you will need to roll the fenders and use fender spacers. Those 500E guys can run any mercedes 19 and below wheels they want! I envy them for that!!!!
