VDO I, II, III meaning?

Hi all. Do any body of you know what means the Roman simbols that you can see in the VDO under the 60, 90 and 120. Some MB have the numbers indicated in miles and kms, mine have only in Kms, but i really dont know what these numbers or symbols means...

I believe its the max speed you should go in the given gear. I= first II= second etc.

I think it is also stated in the manual.

i dont believe its the max speed u should go in the given gear but that u should not shift down to said gear after that point. if your in second and you pass the I , dont shift into gear 1. when i floor it, i can get to a little over 50 but the I is closer to 45 mph.

I always thought of those as shiftpoints. When flooring the car it should bring it all the way to that certain speed, redline and that tick should be hit at the same time before it shifts.

From shiftpoints, when flooring my 300e from a start, it gets to about 3500rpm in first gear and shifts quickly into second. Is it supposed to hold it until 6200? If so, what would be the fix to that one.

Very traditional for German cars.

Old, old VW Beetles had shift points on speedo. No tachometer, of course.

I thought our cars started in second gear?

Yes our cars start in second gear but when you punch it, its downshifts to first and pulls all the way to 3500 or so and then shifts to second and then second goes all the way to redline from there. Only the very first gear when you actually hit the gas pedal to boogie.

Is that normal because if you shift it manually into the lower gear, it pulls it all the way to red and then shifts it into second and then you have to move it out of that to shift to third. I mean you need space to do this cause once you shift third youre doing a 100. Im just wondering why it wouldnt pull all the way to red with the gas pedal alone.

They are not absolute, but they indicate, as stated by RunInColorado, the max recommended speed for a given gear. As such, they also indicate the lowest gear you can safely shift into at a given speed. But if you read the manuals, the points are defined as the max speed for each gear.

Now, obviously your regular shift and downshift points will not be as indicated. Remember, they are if you're running to redline in each gear.
