1992 400E A/C Problems

My first Post. I recently bought a 1992 400E, 97,000 miles for $5,250.00. I knew it had A/C problems. THe seller said his mechanic diagnosed a leaking Expansion Valve, my mechanic, after recharging w/dye says that since he cannot detect a leak on the compressor, expansion valve and other visible parts, it must be the Evaporator Core. (Quoted me $1,700.00 to replace - not a bad price, I think)
I recharged the system Friday at 7pm, Saturday, as late as 2pm, the air was ice cold, by 7PM - 5 hours later (24 hours after recharge) the system was empty, no pressure at all. Seems like this is a BIG leak? I do have a pungent funky odor in the cabin of the car (freon?)
ANyone experience a similar problem?
Other than the A/C the car is awesome. This is my second one, I sold a 1992 400E in 1999 after putting 100k miles on it. I had to have another one.
THanks
Steve

Yes, sure sounds like the evaporator. If you want to be 100% sure check the evaporator box drain tubes under the car and see if oil is leaking from them that is the color of the dye.

I just did this job and replaced all 6 vacuum elements and the blower motor on my friends 90 300D 2.5 turbo.

Yes the price you were quoted is very reasonable if it includes all parts.

do a "search" on evaporator at www.mercedesshop.com and www.500Ecstasy.com

these sites are more serious and have better archives than here.

search is invaluable and these topics are well covered.

i had to have my evaporator replaced on my 400.

you bought a great car, BUT you will have to replace things and spend money on it. if you don't want to, sell it now, before "christine" takes a bunch of your money.

i bought a 2 owner 124.034 [400e] with 89k on it for $8000 in september '05. i've spent over $8000 on bring it current on maintenance and repairs!!!!

evaporator, radiator, waterpump, upper main engine wiring harness, lower main engine wiring harness, powersteering pump, rotors, brakes, real tune-up [caps and rotors], tranny service, front rotors and brakes, bosch euro lights and bosch clear corners

V-8's ain't cheap to keep.
