Semi-Automatic Trannie

What are the pros and cons of using the basic automatic transmission as if it were a manuel. And if there is even a proper way, does the shift need to be with the break, accleration, or neither?

And will someone please give me feed back on the break thread I posted a few days ago.

You'll burn more fuel shifting for yourself?

What's a break thread? Do you mean brakes?

My bad. I did mean Brakes. So it only burns more fuel. It is not bad for the transmission?

if your are shifting an automatic through the gears and letting the engine rev higher, you are putting extra strain on your tranny. An automatic is designed to shift at certain points. If you are overiding that and reving the engine to 4,000 Rpm and then throwing it into dirve or 3, you are going to wear out the transmission very quickly.

Yeah, take me for instance... lol... My car slips into 2nd and third. The people that had it before were used to manual trannys and always popped it in and out of gears, now i am paying for it.
Put it into drive and punch it, its got some go-juice.

I think it's called a Triptonic transmission. I think of it as hollow engineering. It has no use except to satisfy the itchy fingers of the driver. The whole concept of the Triptonic, and the fact that the driver thinks he can do better than the automatic is laughable to me. I pointed this out to my friend as he was trying to impress me with this feature in his SLK 320.

Automatic transmissions are designed to shift at the optimum points for acceleration and economy. A lot of engineering went into automatic transmissions. I know... my dad spent 33 years of his career designing automatic transmissions at Ford and held 15 patents... and many of those patents were useful!

I personally just put the transmission in D or OD - whichever is top gear - and leave it there. Driving in the flatlands of Michigan, I can't ever see the need to place the selector in any of the lower gears.

I agree with others that this practise will only wear out the transmission prematurely.
