Mobil 1 0w-30: using it?
I visited Mobil 1 internet site and they reccomend ONLY their fully synthetic motor oil, Mobil 1 0W-30. Most likely most any 10w-30 oil works if youkeep it clean, however, I was surprised to see the lower number of the weight range as 0w. I've always used 10w-30 in most everything i own except for a 2000 Land Crusier w/ Mobil1 I use 5w-30, due to their recomendation. How many people out there are using Mobil 1 and how many are using the 0w-30 weight?
I'm not looking for what works better...yikes...who wants to go there, just what oils are being used. Yeah, they all work well w/ regular changes. Duh! I also read that MB does not recomend synthetic in the transmission. Comments?
Thanks!
1993 300CE ready for fresh oil (maybe something new?)
never driven in temps near 0 degrees and usually less than 85 degrees

I only use Mobil1 SuperSyn 0W40. Hard to find, but it's the only one I can get in my area retail that meets the MB 229.5 spec. I pay $5.59 per quart for it at my local Autozone.

Mercedes requires an xW-40 or xW-50 oil. You should NOT be using any xW-30 oil, no matter what the marketing monkeys at Mobil claim. I'm not a fan of the 0W-40 oil though... more than one person had issues with that oil which went away after they switched back to either the 5W-40 or 15W-50 varieties of Mobil-1.
FWIW, I strongly prefer the 5W-40, it is actually repackaged Delvac-1 and is a totally different base stock than all the other Mobil-1 oils. My second choices is the 15W-50. The 5W-40 was recently renamed "Turbo Diesel Truck" oil, and they have now made the "Truck & SUV Formula" a lighter 5W-30 (which is not appropriate for Mercedes).
I use the 5W-40 in all my cars, gas & diesel... and I also use Mobil-1 synthetic ATF in my Mercedes transmissions. Synthetic ATF is fabulous stuff.

Another issue was with the hydraulic lifters (cam followers) on the OM60x engine, which are notoriously problematic (noisy as they get older). Synthetic often cures the problem... but again, a couple people had previously quiet lifters become noisy with 0W-40, and it went away when they switched back to the heavier oil.
Nothing earth shattering, really, but since there's no real benefit to using the thinner stuff, why bother?

I too have heard just a few negatives about using 0W-40... 5W-40 seems to be the favorite workhorse synthetic by consensus.
When your 93 300CE was manufactured, 10W-30 was specified for your car. Now Mercedes specifies using nothing thinner than xW-40 weight oils, and back-recommends these new weights for the older models as well.

I use the 0w30 in my Audi chipped twin-turbo...change it every 5000 miles, no problems. Kinda hard to find around here actually. No problems and the car has 90K on it
I use Redline synthetic ATF in my 500Es tranny...for the past 8 years, zero problems; in fact, smoother shifts from my butt-o-meter. Car has close to 150K on it.
The oil weights really matter liitle...as long as you change oil and filter often and hot. Jimmy out.
