W124 Wood

I am sure it has been talked about before but I ask again..
Interior wood the Ac the ashtray and wood console does anyone have a how -to -that- works that they have done themselves ?
Other then Heritage works which is $350. anyone else refinish?
Does anyone sell an overlay for the 3 parts? Plastic or simulated wood ?
Has anyone purchesed the kit from performance that sells for $300. which they are currently out of stock on?
anyone spray them black real glossy and have it come out well?
Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Dave

I was wondering this myself. Everytime I look at the wood and see it starting to crack it errks me! Like Dave asks...anyone ever try a Gloss paint? Or a Leather/Vinyl? Not looking to add any Crappy LV, or Gucci...just something tastefull like a Brown Leatherlike Vinyl...or Paint maybe?

My dads a carpenter for over 30 years now I use to do this for a living to many back problems lifting up them heavy cabinets but n e way. if you want some help with you're wood. let me know. I need help with my wood albert, can you help me out?
anyways, couldnt help it

You can always just get some striper and then recoat it with spar urathane and it turned out fine the last time I messed around with that. I would have needed a couple more coats and a slight wetsand midways but it was clear enough already.

i saw the interior of a 300ce on cardomain that had the wood painted silver with a black stripe doewn the middle. It looked real nice.I was thinking of doing it to mine, but with a blue stripe, since my soft top is navy blue, interior grey. i'm just worried about messing it up, i dont have much experience with painting anything, let alone wood at that

Please don't paint!!

If you paint the wood, IMHO, it will look terrible. Some people put carbon fiber overlays and/or paint the wood silver, etc etc, and I think it looks totally out of place. I say either do it right, or don't do it at all!

Here's a good article on stripping the OEM finish off:

http://boostnbenz.1baddsm.com/DIY/Wood/

However, I've done my fair share of woodworking and I don't recommend putting a final coat on the way he did. I don't have any experience with super high-gloss finishes, but it's generally a good idea to use an HVLP sprayer (high volume, low pressure) made for woodworking. Be very thourough when doing your research. The finish that you'll need to use probably won't be available at Home Depot or Lowes... You'll need to go to a woodworking store like Rockler or Woodcraft. Both have websites if they don't have stores in your area.

If you don't want to go to the hassle of refinishing the wood correctly, I recommend saving up the cash and replacing them will OEM parts. Again, every example of painting I've seen looks aweful. Obviously that's my opinion, but I think if you do your research you will agree with me.

Another option, if you want to change the wood altogether, is to strip the finish off, and carefully sand away the old wood veneer. That will leave the shape of the panel intact, but will give you a new surface to glue to.

Then, go to either Rockler or Woodcraft (or any other high-end woodworking store in your area), and look through their veneer. If you want to upgrade your zebrano wood but want to have it look stock, I recommend a black walnut burl veneer. Buy a book on veneering, and purchase a roller, some adhesive, and the veneer of your choosing.

The next step is to adhere the veneer to the OEM panels. If you're serious about this, you'll use a vacuum system to ensure even pressure is applied while the adhesive is drying. When dry, you can sand it down using very fine sandpaper, then spray the finish on.

Obviously my brief description of the process has holes in it, so you will need to do some reading about how to acheive a piano gloss finish.

I'm an "all or nothing" sort of guy, but please don't ruin your interior by painting!!!

I want to do it in silver burl...so hit me up if you can get the veneer and how much it will cost to do all that....we also have to get some kind of steam on those parts right?...is it just clamps to mold the wood on the console?

Albert,

That hooka base is tight, you gotta make me one out of red C/F. I just picked up a 4hose, rotating collar party hooka. Just waiting for better weather to break it in.. Give me a call on the base bro. Anyways back to the subject. You guys can always just go all REAL C/F. pricey but worth it. I agree the fake C/F vinyl overlay looks kinda cheezy . I just got all my interior pieces back. Everything came out sweet, I'm impressed becuzz they were even able to do the wood roll top in C/F. I'm starting to get tempted like RunEXE and go C/F crazy.

*94EClass that 300CE you're referring to is Alon's I believe. That's actually silver vinyl with the black stripe down the middle.I haven't seen him on here in awhile but Chris knows how to do it, so just him him up

okay, so I just re-read my post and realized I may have sounded overly critical. I drive a champagne (well, technically "smoke silver") car with a light tan interior. So C/F and/or paint wouldn't fit my car at all. So I'm biased and I'd never do anything other than real wood. If you had a car the color of Cali's (i.e. a more sporty-looking car), it may fit the car better. But you gotta do it right... No rattle-can jobs!

Red face wood

All My research ...If you want wood I am looking into this process of Iron on Veneer..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll..._BIN_Stores_IT

if the link doesnt work just search for iron on veneer.. Anyone have any experience with it?

my silver vinyl has held up for over 4 years now... soo I'd say it's all good, plus the wood is still underneath if I remove it.

I'll try but it was hard enough to get it for me, I had to put in overtime on this one...hahaha

You know instead of vinyl they came out with REAL C/F resin sheets that's 3M backed and flexible. It looks pretty good, could be a better option for you guys
