I have a 1989 300E. The car will randomly start now. I just tried a few minutes ago and the car fired right up, turn it off and it fired again. Third time nothing. I tried putting it in neutral and nothing. If the neutral safety switch was bad wouldn't the car start in neutral. AAA tried tapping the starter to no avail. Is there any way to test if the electrical part of the ignition switch is working properly without replacing it.

Try your OVP relay.
Remove the battery
the remove black plastic wall behind battery (its very flimsy and can be easily removed)
you will find what appears to be two plugs, right next to these you will see a little "box" with a plastic see-through flip lid
lift the lid and there lies a "10" fuse, replace and you should be all set.
