transmission fluid change: cost?

I dropped my car at the MB dealer for a brake fluid flush and asked how much for tranny service. The service guy, opps, service writer, quoted me $195. For that price I'll take care of it. He gave me the following: 6 quarts of AT fluid at 3 dollars a qt.,that's wrong right off the bat, MB A/T Fluid is about $16.00 a quart, (yikes!) and wouldn't you think a Mercedes Benz authorized dealer would use all MB parts? Filter change kit, filter was $65/gasket $13, I just bought a filter/gasket kit from Rusty at buymbparts.com for $21.13. The labor $99. I was reading a DIY article at www.mercedesshop.com about tranny fluid changes and he recomended buying a special MB dip stick "Mercedes transmission dipstick tool [Fastlane - J2024-110887] " does anyone know about this tool?

Your transmission has a dipstick.

New cars don't.

Given your lack of knowledge about your car, you're headed for trouble attempting DIY. You'll think $195 a bargain in the long run.

Depending on your level of comfort working on cars, this is a relatively easy DIY job. You could change it yourself for under $40 in parts. Though Kent may be right. If you're not sure of what you're doing, it's best to have a shop do it for you.

Your transmission should use Dexron III fluid, which is $2 qt. Check your owners manual. Your transmission should also already have a dipstick.

tranny fluid change

I have changed the tranny fluid and filter several times in my car, not tht hard. Only thing you need to do special is have someone sit in the car while you're under it (obviously keep safety in mind). have your friend bump the ignition until you get the torque converter drain plug visible through the drain window in the bell housing. Be careful when tightening the fluid pan back on. If you overtighten the bolts it will split the gasket and drain your transmission in about 2 blocks. Good luck.
