The K&N filter is pretty much all you can do as far as a performance filter for the W124. I have seen intake kits out there but their either extremely rare and expensive or just some cheap knock off on ebay.

Mann airfilters

I've had a K&N in the past, they are expensive but generally worth the money. My only complaint is the oiling of the element and this was my own error. I accidentally over-oiled the element and thus had more restriction. Personally I just buy a Mann brand and replace it every year at the most. With the K&N I tended to think it would last forever, they almost do, but a few times when I pulled it out to clean (a real pain in the you know what) it was VERY dirty. FOr the hassle of cleaning I prefer just dropping in a brand new Mann. Personal preference.
